Last summer has shown that adaptation to climate change is essential, but European climate policy must also take into account competitiveness and the livelihoods of the population, MEP Viktória Ferenc stressed in the plenary debate ahead of the COP31 climate conference. The 31st UN Climate Conference will be held in Antalya, Turkey, in November 2026. In addition to climate protection commitments, the focus of international discussions is on adaptation and implementation issues.

In her speech, Viktória Ferenc highlighted that climate change has serious consequences for Europe, so proper adaptation is essential. However, we also face the fact that the Green Deal and the measures based on it have not succeeded.

“While Europe accounts for only 6% of global emissions, major international polluters do not follow the EU’s example. And there is nothing surprising about that. What do you see here in Europe? Decreasing competitiveness, high energy prices and higher prices for residential heating and fuels,” the MEP said.

The politician specifically addressed the issue of the ETS2 carbon tax, due to be introduced from 2028, which will burden households and transportation. According to Viktória Ferenc, when designing climate policy measures, special attention should be given to ensuring that they do not further increase the already high cost of living of European people.

“Instead of the current direction, we stand for a responsible, balanced climate policy that also builds on adaptation,” concluded Viktória Ferenc.
