On Thursday, the European Parliament adopted its resolution on the 2040 climate target, which would further tighten the European Union’s climate commitments by amending the Climate Law. The new target mandates a 90% emissions reduction by 2040 compared to 1990 levels. This severely undermines the EU’s competitiveness and social stability. “Europe does not need more ideology-driven targets. It needs stability, innovation, and affordable energy,” said Viktória Ferenc, MEP for Fidesz–KDNP and member of the Patriots for Europe group, during Wednesday’s debate on the proposal.

While the EU is responsible for only 6% of global emissions, it continues to sacrifice its own industry and competitiveness on the altar of green ideology. The adopted proposal does not take into account the reality of European businesses nor the future costs on households. This is not climate protection but economic self-destruction in the name of green ideology.

It is particularly concerning that the institutions rushed the negotiations, leaving no sufficient time for in-depth debate or impact assessment. With this proposal, the Commission is continuing the Green Deal policies of previous years, with the EPP and the left wing groups eagerly assisting—this approach has already placed a significant burden on businesses and consumers.

“We are not saving the Earth by destroying Europe. Europe needs climate protection—but with reason, proportion, and a firm grip on reality. A policy shaped not by ideological directives but by the interests of citizens and businesses,” added Viktória Ferenc following the vote.
