The Inaction of the European Commission Costs Human Lives
At the European Parliament (EP) plenary session on Monday evening, Viktória Ferenc, MEP of Fidesz–KDNP and the member of the Patriots for Europe Group, called attention to the consequences of the European Commission’s inaction, which has claimed the life of another Hungarian person in Transcarpathia: “Commissioner Marta Kos has taken over two months to respond to our urgent question concerning the serious human rights violations committed by Ukrainian recruitment offices. And while we were waiting for the ultimately disgraceful response, another human rights violation—and, simultaneously, a tragedy—affected the Hungarian community in Transcarpathia. It is outrageous how Brussels handles human and national minority rights violations when it comes to Ukraine. The Commission’s response is disgraceful, turning a blind eye to human tragedies. We are witnessing the decline of EU standards. We must put an end to this indifference before further tragedies occur,” the MEP emphasized.
“A member of our community, Zsolt Rebán, was forcibly conscripted for military training despite a medical exemption confirming his serious heart condition, which proved fatal. His family and our community are mourning,” the MEP of Transcarpathian origin highlighted regarding the latest tragic case.
Viktória Ferenc emphasized: “It is outrageous how the EU institutions handle human and national minority rights violations when it comes to Ukraine. The Commission’s response is disgraceful, turning a blind eye to human tragedies. It only pays attention to human lives when it serves its geopolitical interests. Brussels is pushing for the accelerated EU accession of Ukraine and is determined to open the first cluster of accession negotiations at all costs. However, respect for human rights is an indispensable condition for opening this cluster.”
“We are witnessing the decline of EU standards. We must put an end to this indifference before further tragedies occur,” the MEP concluded her speech.
