On 11 March 2025, at the plenary session of the European Parliament, Olivér Várhelyi, European Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare, presented the Commission’s proposal on critical medicines. Viktória Ferenc, MEP for Fidesz and member of the Patriots for Europe Group, emphasised in her plenary speech that the increasingly frequent medicine shortages caused by supply chain disruptions and geopolitical challenges demand immediate action.
“It is imperative to ensure the continuous availability of life-saving medicines for patients, while preserving the competitiveness and resilience of the European pharmaceutical industry. The Critical Medicines Act must not create additional bureaucratic obstacles or legal overlaps,” she underlined in her speech.
Viktória Ferenc welcomed the fact that, within the framework of the Alliance for Critical Medicines, the Hungarian Commissioner, Olivér Várhelyi, listened to the views of the parties concerned and reflected these concerns in the Commission’s proposal. She stressed that the issue of medicine shortages requires effective, swift solutions free from administrative burdens.
The MEP thanked Olivér Várhelyi for the swift and comprehensive proposal, and wished him every success in its implementation.
