During its plenary session last night, the European Parliament debated the 2025 report assessing the global state of human rights and democracy. In her speech, Viktória Ferenc, MEP for Fidesz–KDNP, underlined: “The left-leaning members of the European Parliament consciously rejected, on political grounds, the inclusion of protections for traditional national and linguistic minorities alongside ethnic minorities in the text. By taking such decisions, you make communities invisible, disregard their concerns and the rights violations committed against them, and abandon them.”

“This is also what is happening to national minorities in Ukraine, including the Hungarian community in Transcarpathia, whose rights continue to be restricted and who cannot rely on support from the Union”, MEP of Transcarpathian origin added.

Viktória Ferenc stated: “I sincerely regret that the European Parliament’s human rights reports are increasingly drifting away from the Union’s core values year after year. This report is yet another document driven by geopolitical interests and applying a double standard.”

“This selective protection undermines the credibility of the European Union. We can truly uphold human rights only if we guarantee the rights of all minorities equally, as required by the Copenhagen criteria. We must insist on this!” concluded the MEP of the Patriots for Europe group.
