European Union Indifference to the Violations of Rights and Tragedies Taking Place in Ukraine
At today’s meeting of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, Members held an exchange of views with Kaja Kallas, the Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission. Viktória Ferenc, MEP of Fidesz–KDNP, drew attention to the horrors of the war raging in Ukraine and also highlighted the tragedy that has befallen the Hungarian community in Transcarpathia. She pointed out: “You know, I come from there, and today there is another Hungarian woman from Transcarpathia here with us in this room, Márta Sebestyén, who suffered a tremendous loss this summer when her brother, József Sebestyén, lost his life as a result of forced conscription in Ukraine.”
“I would like to ask sincerely: what, in your view, best serves the interests of EU citizens — the continuation of the war of Ukraine, or the pursuit of peace? Hundreds of thousands have already lost their lives, millions have been displaced, and for four years, people in Ukraine have been struggling to survive. There is also a serious risk that this tragedy could spread across Europe,” emphasized Viktória Ferenc.
“How many more of these unbearable losses must the local people endure? And despite denials, the situation remains unchanged — anyone can see in videos or in the reports of the Ukrainian Human Rights Commissioner the cruelty of the abuses committed by recruiting officers. Why are you standing idly by while human and minority rights are being violated and corruption is flourishing in Ukraine?!” the MEP from Transcarpathia questioned the High Representative.
In her response, the High Representative, who pursues a biased policy towards Kyiv, did not even mention the human rights violations occurring in Ukraine, nor did she respond to the tragedy involving Márta Sebestyén’s brother. “This behavior is incomprehensible and unacceptable. Enough of the war, enough of the pro-war attitude of Brussels bureaucrats. Let there be peace at last!” emphasized the Fidesz MEP following the meeting.
