At its plenary session on Monday, the European Parliament (EP) discussed a proposal concerning access to clean drinking water. Viktória Ferenc, MEP for Fidesz–KDNP and member of the Patriots for Europe Group, in her speech, emphasized the importance of ensuring access to clean drinking water. She highlighted: “Clean drinking water is the foundation of human life, yet in the European Union, millions of citizens still lack access to safe drinking water. This is unacceptable in a community that has placed fundamental human rights at the heart of its values.”

Viktória Ferenc drew attention to the harmful effects of climate change, environmental pollution, and unsustainable agricultural practices, which are posing an ever more serious threat to Europe’s water resources. “Water supply is an energy-intensive process, and the economic crisis affecting the industry as a result of misguided pro-war proposals from Brussels has only made access to drinking water more expensive. However, clean drinking water is not a luxury, but a fundamental human right!”, she stressed.

The MEP cited Hungary as a positive example: “Hungary’s Fundamental Law guarantees the right to health, and within that explicitly enshrines access to healthy drinking water as a fundamental right. In our country, some of the most affordable and cleanest drinking water is available.”

She emphasized that it is the duty of the European institutions to ensure that the Member States take action to protect drinking water resources and to guarantee access to drinking water for every European citizen.
